SPLISH-SPLASH BABIES

A DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH TO BABY SWIM, WHERE CONNECTION COMES FIRST & SKILLS FOLLOW

Ages 6-36 Months

Our baby program follows the child, not the clock. We use infant development, connection, play, and intentional skill progression to help each child build trust and confidence in the water.

Our Baby and Toddler instructors complete 20+ hours of additional training in infant and toddler development and infant swimming, giving them the tools to support both the swimmer and the parent through this important stage of development.

What is a Development Approach to Baby Swim Lessons?

At Swimming Safari, we believe babies learn best when they feel safe, connected, and supported. Splish-Splash Babies is more than an introduction to swimming, it is a child-led, developmentally informed program designed around the way infants and toddlers learn, move, connect, and build trust.

Even our youngest swimmers are introduced to real foundational swimming skills through a developmentally appropriate approach to water safety, balance, buoyancy, floating, and breath control, along with sensory and vestibular experiences that support their developing bodies and brains. With a strong emphasis on parent education and building the child-parent connection, each class helps our little ones develop the skills, confidence, and understanding of their bodies in the water that will support their swimming progression as they grow.

Every skill is introduced through age-appropriate progression and play, allowing children to build confidence at their own pace. Each child is unique, and we approach them that way- one size doesn’t fit all, and our instructors are experts at following the child's cues, supporting their natural development, and focusing on creating successful experiences rather than forcing skills before they are ready.

What Makes Our Baby Program Different?

  • Child-Led Learning

We follow each child's cues, comfort level, and developmental readiness.

  • Infant Brain & Development

Activities are intentionally designed to support developing motor, sensory, vestibular, language, emotional, and cognitive skills.

  • Connection & Attachment

The parent-child relationship is at the center of every class.

Connection builds safety, safety builds trust, and trust builds skill.

  • Developmental Progression

Skills build intentionally from one stage to the next, meeting children where they are developmentally.

  • Parent Education

We teach parents not just what we are doing, but how and why, giving them tools they can use with their child beyond the pool. You are with your babies every day, and are an important part of your child’s success!

  • Water Confidence & Safety

Children develop foundational water skills through positive, supportive experiences that build confidence and body awareness.

(Invite Only)

This class is for swimmers who have met the program criteria for the next step in their progression. Building Confidence in the Water

OUR GOAL

At Swimming Safari Swim School, our mission extends beyond teaching babies to swim. We focus on fostering a sense of safety and connection for children, ensuring they feel secure in their bodies and build strong relationships with their caregivers and instructors. Our approach nurtures confidence in the water, allowing children to learn at their own pace, tailored to their developmental needs. We also prioritize parent training and education, equipping you with the knowledge to support your child's success in the water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Baby Program Mission Statement:

At Swimming Safari Swim School, we believe that connection builds safety, safety builds trust, and trust builds skill.

Our baby program is built around the whole child. We use an understanding of infant brain development, physical and cognitive development, emotional needs, and age-appropriate motor development to create meaningful experiences in the water.

We follow each child’s lead while intentionally building foundational swimming and water safety skills through play, movement, sensory and vestibular experiences, and developmentally appropriate progression.

We believe babies learn best when they feel safe, connected, and supported. That means meeting each child where they are, recognizing their cues and communication, respecting their developmental pace, and creating successful experiences that build confidence without rushing the process.

We also believe that parents are an essential part of the learning process. Our classes are designed to teach parents not only what we are doing, but how and why we are doing it, so they can confidently support their child’s development, safety, and swimming skills both in and out of the pool.

Our goal is not simply to teach babies to swim. It is to build a strong foundation of water safety, confidence, connection, development, and skill progression that grows with each child and creates a lifelong relationship with the water.

  • Our Splish Splash Babies Program Core Values:

    Safety First

We create a safe, calm, and supportive environment where children can learn without fear and families can build confidence in the water.

    Child-Led Development

We follow the child’s cues, communication, and developmental pace while using intentional teaching to support growth and progression.

    Connection

We believe the parent-child relationship is at the heart of learning. Connection creates the safety and trust that allow children to explore, learn, and build skills.

    Infant Development

We understand that babies are developing rapidly. Infancy is full of progression and regression- both are developmentally appropriate and beautiful things! Our lessons intentionally incorporate motor, cognitive, sensory, vestibular, and emotional development into the swimming experience.

    Progression

We believe in building skills intentionally over time. Children progress through the program based on their development, skills, and individual needs- not simply their age.

    Parent Education & Empowerment

We value the parent child connection, and believe in its power! We teach parents to understand their child, recognize their cues, and confidently support their learning through all stages of growth. We partner with parents and teach them just as much as the child.

    Joyful Learning

Learning should be fun! Through play, songs, movement, routine, and exploration, we create positive experiences that help children develop a lifelong love and respect for the water.

  • Swim Diapers:

Diaper Policy: For the health and safety of our swimmers, children under 3½ years old are required to wear a reusable cloth swim diaper, even if they are potty trained.

Disposable swim diapers are not permitted in the pool.

Need one? Reusable cloth swim diapers are available for purchase at our facility.

  • What to Expect:

    Parent Education

Our program places a heavy emphasis on parent education because we believe learning is a team effort. We work on skills together for 30 minutes once a week, but you are with your child every day! The more equipped you are to support your child’s learning, the more successful they will be.

    Routine & Consistency

Every class begins with the same welcome and warm-up song—and that is intentional! Babies thrive on routine, consistency, and familiar rhythms. Starting class with something predictable and fun helps children feel comfortable, connected, and ready to learn.

    Developmental Themes

Each week, we explore a developmental theme that guides our lesson and gives parents tools they can use both in and out of the water. These themes connect what we are doing in the pool to the way your child is developing and learning.

    Developmentally Appropriate Learning

Our lessons move at a developmentally appropriate pace. We are not rushing little ones to learn; we are learning to pay attention to their subtle cues and communication and use those cues to support their growth in the water. We take a holistic approach, recognizing that a child’s emotional state is just as important as their physical state.

    Progression & Water Safety

Our program is progression-based. While we follow the lead of the child, we are also intentionally building real swimming skills, with a strong emphasis on water safety. Every class includes opportunities to practice safe entry, safe exit, and getting into a float so these foundational safety skills grow alongside swimming skills.

  • How to Prepare at Home for Swim Lessons:

You don't have to wait until your baby starts swim lessons to begin building a positive relationship with the water! Everyday routines like bath time are an opportunity to build water comfort, body awareness, and foundational skills.

  • Pool Safety and Cleanliness:

Our 90-degree indoor, saltwater pool uses advanced filtration and sanitation systems, including:

111-minute water turnover, meaning all 50,000 gallons are filtered every 111 minutes (many pools take 4–6 hours)

A full-flow UV filtration system for an added layer of sanitation

Computer-controlled water chemistry that continuously monitors and maintains proper balance

If your little one has sensitive skin, be confident that our pool will be gentle on their skin, however, we have some quick tips for keeping their skin as happy as can be!
